Shetlands HangarsEnerco install 27 metres of sliding doors in the Shetlands to assist HM Coastguard.

The Shetlands is a harsh environment and one that caused a number of door issues for HM Coastguard when they needed to scramble their helicopters.

The previous manually operated hangar doors were continually getting stuck from corrosion on the bottom track and support wheels. Due to the size of the panels, the doors were fitted externally, leaving the tracks exposed to the weather, gritting and debris when the doors were closed.

In order to resolve these issues, Enerco supplied and installed the Direct Industrial Doors Librum doors.  These were installed inside the building, making them safer to use (as personnel can operate the doors from the safety of the hangar instead of needing the tractor to push them open) and resolving concerns around external tracks.

The solution comprises of two Librum Doors, which cover 27 metres in length and 7.5 metres in height. The two hangars are used by HM Coastguard and Bristows and are operated numerous times daily, typically in emergency situations.

Additionally false side panels were installed to both sides, manufactured from the same material as the door leaves to improve aesthetics. These also hide the bunch of panels when the door is opened.

The new doors are constructed from 80mm thick insulated panels, supported on a new stainless single steel ground track, offering greater resistance to environmental factors.

The Librum drive arrangement moves the leaves in a parallel line until they are clear of the opening, where they stack at 90 degrees to the track, in a well contained bunch measuring approximately 1200mm  x 1200mm, providing full width access to the emergency services. The opening speed is 250mm per leave, meaning that the opening is clear in 54 seconds, far quicker and safer than the previously installed sliding door configuration.

A wicket door is installed in the leading leaf, for ease of access to personnel.

As the doors are to be automated, Enerco provided a safe edge to the front edge of both leaves, together with safety photocells to ensure any entrapment points are also protected.
